From Discoloration to Chips, Dental Veneers Can Correct an Array of Smile Flaws

Dental veneers have become popular among people who want to be satisfied with the appearance of their smile. Cosmetic dentistry can help you transform your look with the help of porcelain veneers. There are several ways that porcelain veneers can help you improve your smile.

Harry Ashitey, DDS, is dedicated to helping you reach your aesthetic goals. At Aesthetic Dentistry and Implant Center in Corinth, Texas, Dr. Ashitey can assist you through the process of getting your veneers.

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that adhere to the surface of your teeth, giving them a more traditionally shaped look. The thin covers are placed on your teeth and made permanent with the help of special dental cement.

Porcelain veneers are best for hiding discoloration or chips in your teeth. The natural contours of the porcelain shells offer a stain-free solution that is natural-looking and meant to mimic the appearance of your natural teeth.

  • Teeth that are stained or discolored
  • Chipped teeth
  • Broken teeth
  • Uneven teeth
  • Teeth that are irregular shaped
  • Teeth with gaps

Veneers work by fitting perfectly to the shape of your mouth while giving you a brighter smile that also appears more even.

What’s the procedure for dental veneers?

When you get dental veneers, it usually requires a few trips to the dentist. The process for veneers requires two separate visits to Aesthetic Dentistry and Implant Center. During this appointment, you should feel comfortable discussing the results you hope to achieve. It will also be determined whether or not veneers are appropriate for your teeth and what kind of limitations you might face.

Dr. Ashitey will determine the right color and shape for your veneers before using the WaterLase® dental laser used to remove some enamel safely. A temporary veneer will be placed on your teeth to protect them. The impression of your teeth will be sent out to a laboratory where your veneers will be constructed.

During your next appointment, your teeth will be cleansed thoroughly to keep bacteria from being trapped underneath the veneer. Etching the tooth and polishing it before the bonding process allows for the veneer to be able to stick easier to the surface of your tooth.

Once Dr. Ashitey determines that it is properly positioned, he will apply the binding cement while utilizing an ultraviolet light that will harden quickly. Excess cement will be removed, and your bite will be evaluated for any last-minute, necessary adjustments. A follow-up visit may be recommenced in a couple of weeks to see how your mouth is responding to the presence of veneers.

After the procedure

The recovery process for dental veneers is not extensive. Once the veneers have been cemented to your teeth, you should be to eat and go about your day as normal. There are no side effects, but you may notice rough patches where extra cement may still linger. The extra cement should wear away in a few days of regular eating and brushing your teeth. Your porcelain veneers should last from 10 to 15 years. There are some precautions you can take to make sure you preserve your veneers for as long as possible. Avoid the following:

  • Chewing on hard objects
  • Using your teeth to open packages
  • Eating with your front teeth instead of your back teeth
  • Playing sports without a proper mouthguard
  • Grinding your teeth at night

Taking care of your veneers

Taking care of dental veneers is as easy as following your regular oral hygiene routine. Brushing, flossing, rinsing with mouthwash, and regular cleanings and check-ups can ensure the proper maintenance of your veneers. Dr. Ashitey may recommend that you avoid certain foods and beverages like coffee or red wine, which are known to cause stains.
